Catheter care

STA Community Nursing nurse in gloves providing catheter care to a man resting in bed at home

Our Registered and Enrolled Nurses provide safe, hygienic catheter care in your home, including insertion, ongoing management, and troubleshooting for indwelling and suprapubic catheters. We monitor for signs of infection, ensure correct drainage and hygiene, and support you or your family with confidence in managing catheter care between visits.

How our nurses can help

  • inserting and changing catheters, as ordered by your doctor
  • checking that your catheter is draining correctly
  • looking after hygiene and skin around the catheter
  • monitoring for signs of infection or other problems
  • showing you and your family what to do between visits
  • keeping your GP or specialist informed

Managing your catheter between visits

Your nurse will explain how to look after your catheter and drainage bag, and who to call if something does not seem right. The Better Health Channel guide to urinary catheterisation is a helpful general guide, and our continence assessment can help if you have wider bladder or bowel concerns.

When to get help

Contact your doctor or nurse promptly if you have a fever, new pain, blood in your urine, or your catheter stops draining, as these can be signs of infection or a blockage. In an emergency, call 000.
