Respite care
Caring for someone you love is rewarding, and it can also be exhausting. Respite care gives family members and carers a break, while the person they care for stays supported by people they can trust.
What respite care can include
Depending on your needs and funding, respite at home can include:
- a few hours of support so you can attend an appointment, run errands or simply rest
- regular visits each week, so a break becomes part of your routine
- personal care and help with daily routines
- companionship and shared activities
- support to get out and about through community participation
Looking after carers, too
Taking a break is not selfish. It helps you keep caring well. Because respite happens in your own home, the person you care for stays in familiar surroundings, with support workers who are matched to suit them.
Funding and support for carers
Respite can be funded in different ways depending on your situation. Our funding options page explains the pathways. The Australian Government’s Carer Gateway service also offers information and support for carers.
