Positive Behaviour Support

Positive behaviour support is a person-centred approach that looks for the reasons behind behaviours of concern, then builds skills and supports to improve quality of life and reduce the need for restrictive practices.

How positive behaviour support can help

Depending on your plan and goals, support can include:

  • understanding what a behaviour may be communicating
  • building new skills and better ways to communicate needs
  • adjusting environments and routines so they work better for the person
  • helping family members, carers and support workers respond in a consistent way
  • reviewing and updating strategies as needs change

Guided by a behaviour support plan

Positive behaviour support is guided by a behaviour support plan, written by a behaviour support practitioner together with the person and the people who support them.
